Yesterday all the past. The language of size

Spreading to China along the trade-routes; the diffusion

Of the counting-frame and the cromlech;

Yesterday the shadow-reckoning in the sunny climates.

 

어제에는 모든 과거가 있었다. 도량형 언어.

무역로를 따라서 쭈욱 이어지는

주판식 계산기와 고인돌의 확산.

그리고 과거에는 따뜻한 햇살 내리쬐는 지역에서 간접 계산법이 있었다.

 

Yesterday the assessment of insurance by card,

The divination of water; yesterday the invention

Of cart-wheels and clocks, the taming of

Horses, Yesterday the bustling world of the navigators.

 

과거에는... 서류에 의한 보험 부과.

해로의 예측.. 또한 과거에는

수레바퀴와 시계의 발명... 말들 길들이기.

항해자들의 북적대는 세상이 있었다.

 

Yesterday the abolition of fairies and giants,

The fortress like a motionless eagle eyeing the valley.

The chapel built in the forest;

Yesterday the carving of angels and alarming gargoyles,

 

그리고 어제는 요정과 거인들의 박멸이 있었다.

계곡을 내려다보는 꼼짝도 않는 독수리와 같은 요새.

숲속에 지어진 교회당.

그리고 천사상과 끔찍한 무서운 괴물상의 새김이 있었다.

 

The trial of heretics among the columns of stone;

Yesterday the theological feuds in the taverns

And the miraculous cure at the fountain;

Yesterday the Sabbath of witches; but to-day the struggle.

 

돌기둥 가운데에서 벌어지는 이단자의 재판.

어제는 주막에서 벌어지는 신학적인 분쟁이 있었다.

그리고 어떤 샘에서 있었던 기적적인 치유법.

어제는 악마들의 연회가 있었다. 하지만 오늘은 투쟁이다.

 

Yesterday the installation of dynamous and turbines,

The construction of railways in the colonial desert;

Yesterday the classic lecture

On the origin of Mankind. But to-day the struggle.

 

어제는 발전기와 터빈의 설치가 있었고,

식민지 사막에서는 철도의 건설도 있었고,

고전적인 강연도 있었다.

인규의 기원에 관한(고전적인 강연) 그러나 오늘날엔 투쟁만이 있다.

 

Yesterday the belief in the absolute value of Greek,

The fall of the curtain upon the death of a hero;

Yesterday the prayer to the sunset,

And the adoration of madmen. But to-day the struggle.

 

어제의 그리스의 절대적 가치에 대한 믿음이 있었다.

영웅이 죽을때 커튼이 내려온다.

어제는 일몰에 대한 기도.

광인들에 대한 찬미... 하지만 오늘은 투쟁이다.

 

As the poet whispers, startled among the pines,

Or where the loose waterfall sings, compact, or upright

On the crag by the leaning tower:

"Oh my vision. O send me the luck of the sailor."

 

시인이 속삭이고 있다... 소나무 숲속에서 깜짝 놀라..

한가한 폭포가 노래하는 곳에서 긴장하여.. 혹은.. 똑바로 서서..

기울어지는 탑 켵의 바위위에.. (똑바로 서서..)

오.. 나의 비전...(이 사라졌다..) 나에게 선원의 운명을 다오..

 

And the investigator peers through his instruments

At the inhuman provinces, the virile bacillus

Or enormous Jupiter finished:

"But the lives of my friends. I inquire. I inquire."

 

탐구자는 ~을 꿰뚫어 보고 있다. 그의 기구를 통해서.

인간 밖의 영역들을. 강력한 세균이라든지.

이미 끝난 거대한 목성이라든지.

"하지만, 내 친구들의 생명에 대해서 나는 탐구하고..탐구하겠다"

 

And the poor in their fireless lodgings, droppong the sheets

Of the evening paper: "Our day is our loss, O show us

Histor the operator, the

Organiser, Time the refreshing river."

 

불길도 없는 추운 집에 사는 가난한 자들은, 저녁 신문을 떨어뜨리면서,

"우리의 날은, 우리의 실패다. 오 우리에게 ~을 보여다오

운행자이며 조직자인 역사를(보여다오)

새롭게 하는 강물과 같은 시간을(보여다오)"

 

And the nations combine each drym invoking the life

That shapes the individual belly and orders

The private nocturnal terror;

"Did you not found the city state of the sponge"

 

국민들이 제 각각의 외침을 결합시킨다. 생명력을 불러내며,

개인적인 배를 만들고.

사적인 한밤중의 테러를 지시하고 (불러내면서)

"당신 생명력이 해면이라는 도시국가를 만들지 않았던가"

 

"Raise the vast military empires of the shark

And the tiger, establish the robin's plucky canton?

Intervene. O descend (as a dove or

A furious papa or a mild engineer), but descend."

 

상어와 호랑이의 거대한 군사제국을 세우지 않았던가.

울새라는 용감한 주를 설립하지 않았던가.

개입하라, 내려앉아라. 비둘기처럼, 아니면.

분노한 아버지의 모습처럼. 부드러운 엔지니어의 모습처럼. 아무튼 내려앉아라.

 

And the life, if it ansers at all, replies from the heart

And the eyes and the lungs, from the shops and squares of the city:

"O no, I am not the Mover;

NOt to-day; not to you. To you, I'm the"

 

그리고 그 생명력이 답변을 한다면,

심장과 눈과 허파로부터, 가게와 도시와 광장으로부터, 답변을 할것이다.

"오 나는 원동력이 되지는 못한다

오늘은 그대에게는 원동력이 되지 못한다"

 

"Yes-man, the bar-companion, the easily-duped;

I am whatever you do. I am your vow to be

Good, your humorous story.

I am your business voice. I am your marriage."

 

"그대들에게 나는 Yes-man이고 술집 종업원이고 잘속는 얼간이다.

나는 당신이 행하는 대로 되는 존재이다. 나는 선량해지겠다는 당신의 서약이다.

그대의 익살스런 이야기다.

What's your proposal? To build the Just City? I will.

I agredd. Or is it the suicide pact, the romantic

Death? Very well, I accept, for

I am your choice, you decision. Yes, I am spain."

 

"그대의 제안은 무엇인가? 의로운 도시를 세우는 것인가? 내가 그러겠다.

나는 동의한다. 아니면(그대가 제안하는 것이) 동반자살의 약속인가? 낭만적인 죽음인가?

좋다... 나는 수용한다.

나는 그대의 선택이고, 그대의 결정이다. 내가 스페인이다."

 

Many have heard it on remote peninsulas,

On sleepy plains, in the aberrant fisherman's islands,

In the corrupt heart of the city,

Have heard and migrated like gulls of the seeds of a flower.

 

많은 이들이 이것을 (스페인의 고통의 소리를) 머나먼 반도에서 들었다.

잠자듯이 교요한 평원에서 들었다. 비정상적인 어부들의 섬에서.

타락한 도시의 심장부에서 (이런 소리를 들었다)

이런 소리들을 듣고 이주해왔다. 갈매기 떼처럼, 꽃씨들처럼.

 

They clung like burrs to the long expresses that lurch

Through the unjust lands, Through the night, through the alpine

tunnel;

They floated over the oceans;

They walked the passes. They came to present their lives.

 

그들이 마치 가시열매처럼 달라붙었다. 기나긴 급행열차의 가시처럼.

불의의 땅을 구불거리며.. 밤을 꿰뚫고, 알프스의 구불구불한 터널을 꿰뚫고. (구불거리며 갔다)

그들은 또 대양 위로 두둥실 떠왔다.

산길을 걸어왔다. 그들의 생명을 바치기 위해서.

 

On that arid sauare, that fragment (nipped off from hot

Africa, soldered so crudely to inventive Europe)

On that tableland scored by rivers,

Our fever's menacing shapes are precise and alive.

 

저 불모의 사각형 땅. 뜨거운 ~에서 떼어낸 저 조각.

(뜨거운) 아프리카에서, (떼어내어) 재간 좋은 유럽에 되는대로 갖다 붙인 (저 조각)

강줄기들이 금을 그은 듯 나눠놓은 대지.

우리 열병 걸린듯, 위협적인 형체들은, 아주 정교하고, 생생하다.

 

To-morrow, perhaps, the future: the research on fatigue

And the movements of packers; the gradeal exploring of all the

Octaves of radiation;

To-morrow the enlarging of consciousness by diet and breathing.

 

내일이면, 어쩌면 미래가 있을지도 모른다. 피로에 대한 연구.

짐 꾸리는 사람들의 움직임. ~에 대한 점진적인 탐구.

빛의 스펙트럼. (에 대한 점진적인 탐구)

미래에는 식이요법과 호흡에 의한 의식의 확대 (이런것들이 미래에 있을지도 모른다)

 

To-morrow the rediscovery of romantic love;

The photographing of ravens; all the fun under

Liberty's masterful shadow;

To-morrow the hour of the pageant-master and the musician,

 

내일은 낭만적인 사랑에 대한 재발견.

까마귀 떼의 사진. ~아래에서 펼쳐지는 온갖 즐거운 행위들

자유의 거대한 그림자. (아래에서 펼쳐지는)

내일은 화려한 무대 연출자의 시간. 음악가의 시간(등등이 펼쳐질 것이다)

 

To-morrow (for the young) the poets exploding like bombs,

The walks by the lake, the winter of perfect communion;

To-morrow the bicycle races

Through the subrubs on summer evenings: but to-day the struggle.

 

또 내일은 젊은이를 위해서 시인들은 폭발할 것이고 (열렬한 연애시를 쓸것이고)

호숫가의 산책, 완전한 정신적 결합의 겨울.

내일은 자전거 경주가

여름철 저녁 교외를 가로지르며 있을텐데, 그러나 오늘은 투쟁이다.

 

To-day the inevitable increase in the chances of death;

The conscious acceptance of guilt in the necessary murder;

To-day the expending of powers

On the flat ephemeral pamphlet and the boring meeting.

 

오늘은 전사할 확률이 불가피하게 증가할수밖에 없다.

이 불가피한 살인이라는 죄를 의식하며, 받아들이는 수밖에 없다.

또 오늘은 ~에 힘을 쏟는것.

맥 없고, 덧없는 그 팜플렛과 지루한 회합(에 힘을 쏟는것).

 

To-day the makeshift consolations; the shared cigarette;

The cards in the candle-lit barn, and the scraping concert,

The masculine jokes; to-day the

Fumbled and unsatisfactory embrace before hurting.

 

그리고 오늘은 일시적인 위안물들과 함께 나눠 피는 담배.

헛간의 카드놀이, 삐걱대는 음악회.

남성적인 농담들. 그리고... 오늘은.

상처주기 전에, 서투른 그리고 불만스러운 포옹들.

 

The stars are dead; the animals will not look:

We are left alone with our day, and the time is short and

History to the defeated

May say 'Alas' bur cannot help nor pardon.

 

별들은 죽어있고 동물들도 쳐다보진 않는다.

우리는 우리의 날(전투의 오늘)만 가지고.. 남아있다. 남아있는 시간은 얼마없고

역사는 패배한 자들에게

'유감이다'라고 말할 것이며, 도움도 용서도 주지 않는다.
